Artificial intelligence involves mapping human thinking and perception onto a computer. The term originated in the 1950s. It has gone through a number of periods of great hype and popularity, and some of the more exaggerated expectations have not been met. Recently, the term has been back on everyone’s lips. The term AI also covers cognitive technologies such as pattern recognition, voice control, gesture control and machine learning. These new programs can do much more than win games of strategy – they can also diagnose rare illnesses from reams of medical information. They write their own entries on social media (chatbots) and can even conduct (simple) conversations.
